Nottingham Child Contact Centre

Honour for Nottingham Child Contact Centre

The Nottingham Child Contact Centre, which uses our church premises, has been given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Our Child Contact Centre, which celebrates its 30th anniversary of service to the community this year, was established by Mary Lower with the support of our then Minister, Rev’d Hamish Baillie, and the congregation. It opened for the first time on 4th February 1985 (under its original name of the Access Centre). Its success led directly to the establishment of similar centres elsewhere in the country and then to the formation of the National Association of Access Centres (now National Association of Child Contact Centres). NACCC offers support for Centres throughout the UK providing safe, neutral places for children to meet the parent who no longer shares their home.

The pioneering work that took place in Nottingham has been very influential, receiving widespread national acceptance and is reflected in the provisions for parental contact with children in the Children Act 2004. The Nottingham Child Contact Centre, supported by some 50 volunteers remains the largest of its kind in the country.

It is fitting that in its thirtieth year the Centre has been given this prestigious award which was presented to our team of Contact Centre volunteers by the Lord-Lieutenant of the County.

30 years of the Child Contact Centre

Happy birthday to our Child Contact Centre!

Thirty years ago this weekend, one of our members (a local J.P.) opened up the church halls to provide a safe space for children to keep in touch with parents following separation. Originally know as the “Access Centre” this idea so clearly filled a need, other centres were opened and, from this acorn, grew the National Association of Child Contact Centres, which now numbers about 350 centres across the country.

This was their birthday cake today, where it all began.
