Christmas 2017

Thank you to everyone who planned, lead, participated in and attended our church events and services this Christmas time. We are so grateful to our minister, our Junior Church members (and their leaders), our choir (its director and our organist) for the wonderful celebration they have made Christmas this year.

Carols in the Courtyard 2017

Carols in the Courtyard was a very successful event again this year. On a rather more mild evening than we usually have, the carols were much enjoyed – as was the wonderful variety of refreshments!

Junior Church link with Upendo

Much of the money raised by the Junior Church (mainly through sales at coffee time) is donated to support work at Upendo Junior School in Kenya, helping to change the lives of over 120 children, many of them orphans.

The new buildings that we helped to fund are now in use. Upendo’s three biggest needs currently are for sponsorship for individual students, laptops for their community children’s computer lab and furniture for the classrooms. (At the moment, children often have to sit on the floor to work.)

World Church afternoon 2017

We were delighted to host the 2017 World Church afternoon for Nottinghamshire Area United Reformed Churches on Sunday 19th November.

The theme of the annual event on this occasion was a celebration of our world church links. We reflected on the work of the Council for World Mission, of which the URC is one of thirty-two member churches, the Botswana Synod of the United Congregational Church of South Africa, with which our synod has close links and Commitment for Life to which many, if not all, our local churches make a contribution. Our minister, Revd. Chris Ford, hosted the event and we were delighted that Judith was able to come and speak about the link with Botswana and that Sylvia was present to give up-to-date information about Commitment for Life partners, the Zimbabwe connections in particular.

Following the presentations and sharing of other stories, we enjoyed a bring-and-share tea and then worship incorporating hymns and chants from different parts of the world church.

Evening of Entertainment

We enjoyed a wonderful evening on 3rd November when the Goldsmith Players, the church Choir, ukulele group, band and others offered a mix of engaging, moving and amusing items to entertain an appreciative and responsive audience, with proceeds going to support our Operation Christmas Child shoe-box appeal.

Thank you to all involved.

Harvest 2017

Our Junior Church presented a wonderful, informative and engaging service for our harvest thanksgiving this year on the theme of “recycling”. We learned about what can be done with plastic bottles, plastic bags and old jumpers!

We had an augmented Traidcraft stall and also enjoyed a “bring and share” lunch with an international flavour.

Induction of Rev’d Chris Ford

The service to induct Rev’d Chris Ford as minister of our church took place on Sunday 3rd September. Led by the moderator of our East Midlands Synod, Rev’d Peter Meek, this was a well-attended and very happy occasion.

Chris will service as our minister and twenty percent of his time will be used to provide ministry to other United Reformed Churches in Nottinghamshire.

Crafternoon

The members of our Craft Club welcomed all-comers to a special “Crafternoon” on Sunday 23rd July.

Organised to raise money for CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner-City Kids), the afternoon gave visitors the opportunity to try out a variety of crafts and to make a series of products including iris-fold cards, candles, wool brooches, glass garden lanterns, covered pencil pots, friendship bracelets and face-cloth animals. Apart from the crafting, another highlight of the afternoon was the chance to chat over a delightful afternoon tea.

Thank you to everyone who organised and supported the event.
