Christmas Carol Service 2012

We enjoyed a wonderful service of carols and readings for Christmas again this year.

The choir was led by Phil Hodgson in her first carol service as Choir Director and the organist was Chris Sennett.

We hope that you enjoy our photographs:

Harvest Festival 2012

The Junior Church and Youth Group led our Harvest Festival service this year on the theme of plants – leading our thinking about the importance of plants in our lives and the many different ways they help us. Their entertaining and thoughtful presentations referred to the uses of plants in medicine, clothing, furniture, building, cosmetics and many various household products as well as food.

The flower arrangements around the church also picked up on the theme of plants and their many uses.

New Choir Director

Phil Hodgson has formally taken over as our new Choir Director.

Phil has conducted our church choir on a number occasions in the past, including leading several of our Passiontide/Easter presentations of Readings and Music and performances of the Messiah.

Sunday 2nd September 2012 was her first Sunday in her new “official” capacity and we wish her well in her new role and thank her for taking on this responsibility.

Promotion Sunday, a baptism and new members

On Sunday 9th September we had three reasons to celebrate a real church family occasion:

  • Some of our children and young people will move to their new departments of the Junior Church
  • We have the joy of a baptism
  • We welcome some members of our Youth Group into full membership of our church

It was a very happy day.

Jubilee “Songs of Praise”

Jubilee "Songs of Praise"

Jubilee "Songs of Praise" 20th May 2012

Many former members and choir members joined us for a special Jubilee “Songs of Praise” on Sunday 20th May 2012 to celebrate Jerry Morris’ 50 years of service as choirmaster at our church.

Jerry and his wife, Pat, chose the hymns, with one selected by Sylvia – another founder member of the choir Jerry reformed in 1962. An augmented choir opened the service with Parry’s “I was Glad” and concluded the worship with Vaughan William’s arrangement of the “Old 100th”.

After the service, during which Ron Kenyon gave a tribute to Jerry and a presentation was made, there was a very enjoyable congregational lunch.

An article about Jerry’s achievement which appeared in the Nottingham Evening Post on Tuesday 15th May may be read by following  THIS LINK.

Carol Service 2011 – a celebration

The Service of Carols and Readings for Christmas was a joyous service with a traditional mix of carols and bible readings (we used the Authorised or St. James’ version in this, its 400th year).

Immediately following the service there was a brief presentation to mark the 50th carol service that has been organised by our choir master, Jerry Morris. This link will open a newspaper article about Jerry and this remarkable piece of service.

At the refreshments following the service and presentation, donations totalling £360 were made and this was given in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Harvest 2011

We had a joyful Harvest Festival Service on 16th October.

The theme, this year, was the Harvest of the Sea and our all-age service involved our children andyoung people as well as our older members.

The church was beautifully decorated, with the flower arrangers managing to produce displays to match the theme well. Flowers were distrubuted to members of the church family while gifts of food were donated to the Friary Drop-In Centre in West Bridgford.
