Worship and Education Group

The Worship & Education Subgroup (W&Esg) of the Elders’ Meeting supports the minister and our pulpit supply secretary in organising arrangements for services and opportunities for members to develop their faith.

The group helps to schedule our special services , including our festival services at Christmas, Easter and Harvest, those led by the Choir, the Goldsmith Players and the Junior Church and our Orchestra Sunday, Christian Aid Week service, Remembrance Sunday Service and Bereavement Service. Other special services include those arranged for children such as a Christingle and our “Eastingle” services.

W&Esg is involved in planning and preparing themes for study by our Study Groups. These normally take place during Lent, with meditations also being offered during Advent and Holy Week. The group also works to arrange special Sunday evening services, often held over Zoom, on a particular theme and involving outside speakers. These services are generally followed by discussion. Some of the more recent themes have included “Black Lives Matter” and environmental issues.

Members are encouraged to participate in other education opportunities offered by our Synod and the wider URC, particularly through the StepWise programme.

W&Esg coordinates our church’s work raising money for Christian Aid, and our support for this through the URC Commitment for Life scheme. It often helps to lead services in One World Week and during Christian Aid Week and keep in touch with the activities of CWM (the Council for World Mission) and other missionary and international church developments.

We supported FairTrade, becoming a “Fairtrade Church” and following the closure of FairTrade have continued to have a stall selling fairly traded goods after morning worship about once a month. This and other activies helps to raise our awareness of issues in the developing world and of mission in the wider world.
